A Newsletter for IEEE Geographic Unit Volunteers

Reminder to Vote: IEEE Annual Election

IEEE members are requested to participate in the annual IEEE elections.  This is your opportunity to provide input to determine who will serve on the IEEE Board of Directors, Member and Geographic Activities Board, Technical Activities Board, IEEE-USA Board, and Standards Association Board.  The ballots for the IEEE Annual Election have been mailed to all eligible IEEE voting members.  Please remind the members in your Geographic Unit to vote.  The IEEE Annual Election Web page has more information about the election and a link to access the ballot electronically.  Ballots must be received by 12:00 p.m. CT (17:00 UTC) on 1 October 2009.

Recognizing Outstanding IEEE Volunteers: MGA Awards

You can help recognize the efforts of outstanding volunteers by nominating someone for one of the prestigious Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) Awards.  Each prestigious award has a unique mission and criteria and offers the opportunity to honor distinguished colleagues, inspiring teachers, and corporate leaders.

If you know someone who has made substantial Regional contributions through innovative projects, exemplary leadership, service, or by fulfilling the goals as related to global activities, consider nominating them for one of the following awards:
Please complete the Online Award Nomination Form.  The deadline for nominations is 15 October 2009.  If you have any questions, please e-mail MGA Awards.

Nomination Process for IEEE Fellow Class of 2011 is Now Open

The nomination period is now open for the IEEE Fellow Class of 2011 and will continue through 1 March 2010.  Nominees for Fellow must be an IEEE Senior Member or IEEE Life Senior Member with contributions that have advanced engineering, science, and technology, bringing significant value to society.  Members can be nominated in one of four categories: application engineer/practitioner, educator, research engineer/scientist, or technical leader.

Please visit the IEEE Fellow Web page for more information, detailed instructions for preparing the application, and required forms.  Please use the online application for nomination.  Using the online process, once you have submitted the completed application, notification is automatically sent to references and endorsers, alerting them that they have been asked to help with the nomination.  This online application will save you a great deal of time, and you can monitor replies throughout the entire process.

Please e-mail the IEEE Fellow Staff with any questions.

IEEE Press Call for Editorial Board Nominations

IEEE Press is seeking nominations for qualified candidates who are willing to serve, if elected, on the IEEE Press Editorial Board or in the position of Editor-in-Chief.
Members of the Board serve three-year terms, with a maximum of two terms.  The Editor-in-Chief serves a two-year term, which may be renewed.  A member of the IEEE Press Editorial Board must be an IEEE Member, Senior Member, or Fellow.  The primary duty of Board members is to provide technical and scientific expertise in the development of world-class, technical books.  Board members are asked to work on a continuing basis with the Editor-in-Chief and professional acquisitions editors to recruit authors, review their proposals, and assist in identifying technical reviewers of proposals, and complete book manuscripts.

Please e-mail nominations to Lani Angso by 21 September 2009 (with a biography of no more than two pages that demonstrates the candidate’s interest and technical experience).  Self-nomination is permitted.  Please e-mail Ken Moore, Director, IEEE Book & Information Services, for additional information.

Registration Open for IEEEXtreme Programming Competition 3.0

The IEEEXtreme Programming Competition 3.0, hosted by IEEE, will take place on 24 October 2009.  It is an innovative global online competition in which a team of up to three IEEE Student Branch members can test their collective coding expertise simultaneously against other student programmers around the world.  The team that solves and wins the world's most Xtreme programming challenge will be able to claim ultimate bragging rights, be recognized as some of the world's top up-and-coming programmers, and win an all-expense-paid trip to the IEEE event or conference of the team's choice – anywhere in the world!  For more information or to register, visit the IEEEXtreme home page.

Improvements to Conference Search

The Conference Search function on the Meetings & Conferences Web presence has been dramatically enhanced to improve its functionality. Some of the enhancements include:

  • an expanded number of searchable fields;
  • an array of improved keyword search capabilities;
  • a significantly revised help page;
  • the removal of misleading and broken links.

As a result of these enhancements, Conference Search now offers more flexibility in searching, more relevant search results, and a more seamless "One IEEE" Web experience.  Your feedback is welcome.

Geographic Unit Asset Protection Reminders

As a reminder, the Unit Chair and Treasurer should periodically review the original monthly account statements and compare them to a recent financial report.  It is good business practice for Unit leaders to review account activity so that more than one person has oversight of the financial records.

Additionally, the Treasurer should present the Section/Chapter check register(s) to the Section Executive Committee at least two times during the year for review and approval.  A check register should always include name, date, amount, budget line, and purpose for each transaction (for example, expense reimbursement, services provided, etc).  The reason for this is to provide an independent review of expenses and to ensure that the Section Executive Committee is informed and approves Unit expenses.  Please e-mail Financial Reporting Staff with any questions.
