How did IEEE find you?

I begun volunteering at IEEE as student branch chair of Federal University of Bahia.

Describe something that you did as a volunteer that you are proud of:

After reactivating the SB and getting the activities going, I motivated the local students to organize the Region 9 Student Branch Congress in Bahia, Brazil. The meeting was a great success, with students and volunteers from all over Latin America and guests from all over the world participating. The local impact was great. Being the Region 9 Student Rep was another great thing that happened during my student year.

How has IEEE nurtured you as a person?

From a career perspective, many Senior Members offered career guidance and advice. From a personal perspective, I have become more skillful in negotiation, conflict management, and a better team player.

How has IEEE prepared you for your workplace?

IEEE has given me another view of the world. Interacting with very senior people in a non-competitive environment allowed me to embrace big projects and take on risks and the benefits associated with them. It has removed the fear that any young engineer has when he/she leaves school and works in the ‘real world’.

What do you like most about volunteering with IEEE?

Opportunity to interact with so many different people, with different cultures and backgrounds. It was certainly the best school I could have to develop the people skills I need to do my job every day.

Why did you continue volunteering?

I definitely want to stay involved with IEEE for the rest of my life. I look at Ted Hissey and see the inspiration for what I want for my life when is time to retire
