How did IEEE find you?
|
|
I was the first to start a
Women in Engineering (WIE) Affinity
Group (AG) outside the US. The AG
initiative for non-technical
entities in IEEE had just been approved,
I sent an e-mail to the WIE
asking how I could help and I ended up
setting up the Spain
Chapter. The same year I attended an
IEEE Conference where the WIE
Committee was meeting. They invited me
to stay. I (apparently) gave
some constructive comments and one and a
half years after I was
appointed a member on that committee.
|
Describe something that you did as a
volunteer that you are proud of.
|
|
Co-organize the Student
Branch Congress of the Region 8 in 2004
that took place in Passau, Germany.
|
How has IEEE nurtured you as a person?
|
|
As a volunteer, I benefit
strongly from networking. Through
my participation in the
IEEE, I become a better person year
after year. I really enjoy
my participation and the challenges of
my positions. I am devoted
to making the IEEE better and as a
result contributing to the
engineering profession and humankind
generally. I enjoy every
second of my IEEE work. The people I
have met in the IEEE have
believed in me, empowered me and made me
improve. This has been a
very rewarding experience.
|
What wouldn't be possible for you, if
you hadn't volunteered
for IEEE?
|
|
It would be impossible for
me to have such a broad international
perspective of what engineering is and
what engineering education
should focus on.
|
What do you find unique about IEEE?
|
|
The global nature of the
organization.
|
Why did you continue volunteering?
|
|
In my case, I do not
volunteer as much I used to because of
personal commitments. I have two small
daughters, one is two, the
other is six-months and that keeps me
away from IEEE more than I
would like to. Life has to be a balance
between various commitments.
If I could, I would volunteer MORE for
the IEEE as I enjoy it so
much.
|
Does volunteering help you to achieve
your
aspirations?
|
|
Yes, it does. It satisfies
my networking eagerness (in an
international playing field), it
improves my negotiation
capabilities and it supports my
travelling to interesting places to
meet new (and not that new) people.
|
An IEEE friend who left an inspiring
impression on you.
