Call for Projects for STAR Program

STAR was developed to address the growing concern that girls are discouraged from careers in mathematics, science, engineering and technology at a young age. This educational outreach program promotes involvement of IEEE members with local junior high and high schools to inspire a positive image of engineering careers. Through a one-to-one interaction of society volunteers with a Teacher-Student Team, the goal of STAR is to create a technical support network for teachers and a mentoring program for the students.

WIE encourages IEEE Societies, Sections, Student branch affinity groups and WIE affinity groups the opportunity to offer the program to their respective members. The Societies and Sections will be allowed to determine their own level of implementation of the program (Administrative Committee and/or Chapter level). STAR provides an opportunity for the various IEEE entities to increase their community involvement.

Amount of Award

For each project accepted, the group will be given an award up to $500 USD.  The award will be distributed half upon acceptance of the project, and the second half at the successful completion of the project.

General Guidelines/Eligibility for Submission

Submitters’ should review the following information regarding submission guidelines: 

Funding is available only for STAR projects and pre-university outreach.

Each project should include the following:

  • quantifiable objectives
  • measurable outcomes
  • provide a detailed agenda of activities
  • provide a timeline for the project
  • provide information on methods used in advertising the outreach
  • provide the number of attendees expected
  • demonstrate how the project will encourage girls towards careers in mathematics, science, engineering and technology.
  • provide a detailed summary on how the effectiveness of the project will be evaluated.
  • a statement from the submitter’s agreeing to provide a report to IEEE WIE on the project, including photos (.jpg format) at completion.
  • a statement from the submitter agreeing that after the completion of the project, an evaluation must be completed by the teacher/supervisor/coordinator.

Types of Projects that are eligible are as follows:

  • demonstrate the impact the outreach will have on females.
  • hands-on activities
  • presentations
  • educational field trips
  • IEEE volunteer to teacher/coordinator training

Types of Projects that are not eligible:

  • non pre-university outreach projects
  • non IEEE-members who submit projects
  • projects that do not meet the eligibility requirements

Assessment Criteria

Each submission will be reviewed by the IEEE Women in Engineering Committee (WIEC) to determine whether the project meets the eligibility criteria.  Once the project is approved by the IEEE WIEC, the appropriate funding amount will be determined.

There is no guarantee that by submitting your project it will be reviewed quarterly and approved by the IEEE Women in Engineering Committee.

Deadline for Projects

This is an on-going submission process.  There is no deadline. Submissions will be reviewed quarterly.
