WIE and IEEE Announcements WELCOME FROM THE IEEE 2007 WIE COMMITTEE CHAIR
This past year, we began developing a strategic plan that included mission and vision statements that reflects the needs of our membership. With the hard work of our past chair, Mary Ellen Randall and our Chair Emeritus, Jan Brown, we incorporated the results of a survey of over 1500 IEEE members. It is clear that we need to support women at all stages of their careers, whether it be attracting girls into engineering and the sciences, helping young women succeed in engineering programs, finding career opportunities or inspiring women to achieve unimaginable success. Our major initiative for 2007 will be the development of the IEEE WIE magazine that will focus on the major issues and challenges for Women in Engineering and the Sciences. We will also be hosting a variety of outreach campaigns on IEEE.tv that are intended to help young girls understand what engineering is and what exciting career opportunities await them. I am very impressed with the activities that the WIE Affinity Groups have supported and look forward to working with you to help make your Affinity Groups thrive. I am very honored to be the WIE Committee Chair and welcome your input and feedback as we embark on this exciting new year. Karen Panetta IEEE WIE Committee Chair, 2007

WIE WINNIPEG (CANADA) LEADS ROBOT BUILDING WORKSHOP IN CHINA Contributed by Jennifer Jessop In September 2006, WIE Winnipeg sponsored a robot building workshop at the Clifford International School in Guangzhou, China. In partnership with Manitoba Robot Games (MRG), WIE member Jennifer Jessop helped the students in Grades 5 and 6 to construct Robocritters, with the assistance of the Grade 5 & 6 teachers and their teaching assistants. The event was fully sponsored by the MRG and WIE.
The school children enjoyed the robot building experience and amazed their teachers at their ability to learn and adapt quickly. The students worked in groups of four to design and construct the robots. The teams divided themselves into design and construction sections and focused on their individual areas and then came together to assemble the final product. The elements of safety, team work and creativity were stressed as key areas to focus on for the students A pre-robot building meeting was held with the teachers to construct a robot prototype, which was almost more challenging than the workshop itself. The teachers are interested in future robot workshops. A possible workshop is being planned for April 2007. IEEE STUDENT BRANCH AT INSTITUTE OF SPACE TECHNOLOGY, ISLAMABAD (PAKISTAN) HELPS FORM NEW WIE AFFINITY GROUPS Contributed by Adnan M. Qureshi In July and August 2006, the IEEE Student Branch at the Institute of Space Technology, Islamabad visited NIIT (Nust Institute of Information Technology, Rawalpindi) and NWFP University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar. The visit included a presentation on IEEE with special emphasis on Women in Engineering (WIE) affinity group formation. The visits were a success and petitions from both universities were submitted to the IEEE, USA after a short span of time. The IEEE student branch at the Institute of Space Technology, Islamabad played an important role in creating WIE affinity groups at the following two institutions:
In September 2006, the IEEE Islamabad Section organized the 1st International Conference on Advances in Space Technologies (ICAST 2006) and the IEEE publicity/advertisement stall was set up by the IEEE student branch at the Institute of Space Technology, Islamabad. The Women in Engineering (WIE) stall was also operated by the Institute of Space Technology, Islamabad and it was a success.

WIE MEMBER HELENE HOI-YING FUNG WINS RAB GOLD ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Contributed by Valerie Maxwell Helene Fung, one of the founding members of the Western Australia (WA) Section WIE and GOLD Affinity Groups, has been selected as the 2006 recipient of the Regional Activities Board GOLD Achievement Award. The IEEE Regional Activities Board is pleased to honor Helene for the outstanding contributions she has made to numerous IEEE activities and the example she sets in carrying forward the goals and objectives of the IEEE Regional Activities Board. The Award consists of a cash prize and a plaque, which carries the following citation: "For outstanding contributions in Western Australia GOLD activities, and encouraging industry support and participation." Helene was successfully nominated by the WA Section for the IEEE Region 10 GOLD Award and her submission was presented by Y. W. Liu to be considered for the RAB award. Her IEEE representation began as an active member of the University of Western Australia Student Branch, then co-founding the local GOLD group. She is also a founding member of the WA Section WIE Affinity Group. Helene is very active in the IEEE at the regional level and encourages others to become involved and contribute to the wider engineering community. In the words of Helene, "While the award is in my name, I think that it was a group effort from the whole committee which made our achievements possible, and I sincerely thank them all. Things were not exactly easy to coordinate because I had to travel quite a bit for my work and other IEEE commitments this year, and a few other GOLD committee members also traveled frequently for their work. But everyone did their part and helped out. I will be using part of the cash reward from the Gold Achievement Award towards buying drinks for the committee at our end-of-year committee thank-you dinner!" |
