Metin Akay, Associate Professor of Engineering, Dartmouth College, received his B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey in 1981 and 1984, respectively, and a Ph.D. degree from Rutgers University in 1990. Dr. Akay is Editor of the IEEE Press Series on Biomedical Engineering, and a member of the EMBS ADCOM and Publication, Strategic Planning and Distinguished Lecture Series Election Committees of the EMBS. He is the author/coauthor of ten books, including Theory and Design of Biomedical Instruments (Academic Press, 1991), Biomedical Signal Processing (Academic Press, 1994), Detection Estimation of Biomedical Signals (Academic Press, 1996), and Time-Frequency and Wavelets in Biomedical Signal Processing (IEEE Press, 1997). His latest books, Nonlinear Biomedical Signal Processing, Volumes I and II, will be published by IEEE Press in July 2000. Dr. Akay was the guest editor of several special issues of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine, Annals of Biomedical Engineering and Journal of Biomedical Engineering on the Fuzzy Logic in Medicine and Biology, Time-Frequency and Wavelet Analysis of Biomedical Signals, Wavelets for Medical Images, Virtual Reality in Medicine, New Advances in Biomedical Signal and Image Processing , and Advances in Cardiovascular and Brain Research . He organized several conferences, workshops, symposiums and special sessions in these areas at the International Conferences of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) and BMES. He was also the chair of the 1997 EMBS Summer School and co-chair of the IEEE EMBS 1999 on Biomedical Signal Processing. Dr. Akay is the program chair of the IEEE EMBS Conference 2001 and the IEEE EMBS Summer School 2001. He gave 15 keynote and plenary talks and several invited talks at international meetings including the ICAP'94, IFSA'95, the DSP applications and Exhibition Conference '96, the Satellite Symposium of EMBS '98, the 12th Annual Conference of Japanese Society of Medical Electronics and Biomedical Engineering, and the first Latin-American Conference on Biomedical Engineering '98. In addition to 11 books, Dr. Akay has published more than 57 journal papers, 55 conference papers, 10 abstracts and 12 book chapters. He holds two U.S. patents. Metin
