IEEE Information Drives Computer Software Patents

Studies conducted by the independent research organization 1790 Analytics have shown that IEEE scientific and technical articles are cited more than six times as often as articles from any other publisher.

In the computer software industry, IEEE leads the pack as the top scientific-technical source of patents – 32% of all patent citations, versus just 10% for the number-two organization, ACM.

Looking at the broader period of 1983 to 2003, an earlier study reveals that more than one-third (36.9%) of all science references used in securing software patents came from IEEE publications. That's more than double the references to publications of the Association for Computing Machinery.
