Studies conducted by the independent research organization 1790 Analytics have shown that IEEE scientific and technical articles are cited more than six times as often as articles from any other publisher.

In the telecommunications industry, IEEE leads the field as the top scientific-technical source of patent citations, an amazing 44% of all patent citations in the field, versus just 4% for the number-two organization, IEE (whose journals are also available through the IEEE Xplore digital library), and 2% for the number-three publisher, OSA.

Top-Cited Publishers in Telecommunications Patents

Looking at the broader period of 1983 to 2003, an earlier study has shown that IEEE-published studies are at the heart of telecommunications patenting activity, with a staggering 53.3% of all science references from telecommunications patents during that 20-year period going to IEEE journals.
