The Digital Library as a Research Network and Community
|
January 2007 – A successful model for contribution and use in a paper in D-Lib Magazine has been developed at the Science Education Resource Center at Carleton College, who say that a successful educational digital library is as much a social process as a technical problem. Despite the challenges of being a labor-intensive process, and the reluctance of faculty to adopt the use of digital libraries, the researchers say their Teach the Earth digital library for geoscience education has been particularly effective in three areas: creating a DL rich in contextual information, creating processes for community contribution and enhancement of these resources and integrating the use of the library into the professional development of geoscience faculty and teachers. The authors say a networked digital library offers high value because users repeatedly find resources in the library in the course of their normal searching with commercial search engines, users are confident they can find appropriate resources repeatedly, and users are enticed deep into the library collections to find the best resources for their purpose.
