IEEE Approves Six New Publications for 2008

June 2007 — IEEE has approved six new publications for 2008. The list of new journal titles, which offer an exciting array of information on a wide variety of engineering and computer science topics include :

» IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Magazine
» IEEE Transactions on Services Computing
» IEEE Transactions on Haptics
» IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies
» IEEE Reviews in Biomedical Engineering
» IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing

IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Magazine
The IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Magazine (ITSM), sponsored by the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Society, will focus on publishing peer-reviewed articles that provide innovative research ideas, report significant application case studies, and raise awareness of pressing research and application challenges in all areas of intelligent transportation systems. The journal, in contrast to the highly academic IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems, will serve as a dissemination vehicle for information regarding developments in the intelligent transportation field to all members of the ITS society and other interested parties. High quality tutorials, surveys, successful implementations, technology reviews, lessons learned, policy and societal impacts, and ITS educational issues will also be published in the new magazine.

The ITS Magazine will also serve as an ideal media communication vehicle between the governing body of ITS society and its membership and promote ITS community development and growth.

IEEE Transactions on Services Computing
The scope of IEEE Transactions on Services Computing, sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society, will focus on any computing or software aspect of the science and technology related to services innovation research and development. The periodical will emphasize the algorithmic, mathematical, statistical, and computational methods that are central in services computing; the emerging field of Service-Oriented Architecture; Web Services; Business Process Integration; Solution Performance Management; Services Operations; and Management. Services Computing will cover the whole lifecycle of services innovation research from both computing and software perspectives including, but not limited to:

  • Mathematical foundation of services computing
  • Service-oriented architecture (SOA)
  • Service creation, development, and management
  • Linkage between IT services and business services
  • Web services security and privacy
  • Web services agreement and contract
  • Web services discovery and negotiation
  • Web services management
  • Web services collaboration
  • Quality of service for web services
  • Web services modeling and performance management
  • Solution frameworks for building service-oriented applications
  • Composite web service creation and enabling infrastructures
  • Business and scientific applications using web services and SOA
  • Business process integration and management using web services
  • Standards and specifications of services computing
  • Utility models and solution architectures
  • Resource acquisition models in utility computing
  • Mathematical foundation of business process modeling, integration, and management
  • Business process modeling, interaction, and collaboration

The goal of IEEE Transactions on Services Computing is to enable IT services and computing technology to perform business services more efficiently and effectively.

IEEE Transactions on Haptics
Sponsored by the IEEE R&A society and the IEEE Computer Society, IEEE Transactions on Haptics, will address the science, technology and applications associated with information acquisition and object manipulation through touch. Haptic interactions relevant to this journal include all aspects of manual exploration and manipulation by humans, machines, and interactions between the two, performed in real, virtual, teleoperated, or networked environments. Specific research areas to be included in IEEE Transactions on Haptics would include, but not be limited to:

  • Human haptic and multi-sensory perception and action
  • Haptic interactions via passive or active tools and machines
  • Devices that sense, enable, or create haptic interactions locally or at a distance
  • Haptic rendering and its association with graphic and auditory rendering in virtual reality
  • Algorithms, controls, and dynamics of haptic devices, users, and interactions between the two
  • Human-machine performance and safety with haptic feedback
  • Haptics in the context of human-computer interactions
  • Systems and networks using haptic devices and interactions, including multi-modal feedback
  • Application of the above in areas such as education, rehabilitation, medicine, computer-aided design, skills training, computer games, driver controls, simulation, and visualization

IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies

IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies, sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society, will publish peer-reviewed archival research papers and critical survey papers that describe original research or offer a critical review of learning technologies. Topics within the scope of the journal include technology advances in online learning systems, intelligent tutors, educational software applications and games, as well as simulation systems for education and training. Also within the scope of IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies are papers concerning collaborative learning tools, devices and interfaces for learning, interactive techniques for learning, tools for formative and summative assessment; ontologies for learning systems, standards and web services that support learning, as well as authoring tools for learning materials, computer support for peer tutoring, learning via discovery, project, field or lab work, and the creation and management of learning objects that provide innovative research ideas and critical survey papers. Evaluations of technology would be considered if the technology is novel or significant technical insights are to be gained.

IEEE Reviews in Biomedical Engineering
Sponsored by the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, IEEE Reviews in Biomedical Engineering (RBME), is aimed at providing a platform for papers dealing with new developments and emerging trends in the field of biomedical engineering, an interdisciplinary field embracing engineering, life sciences and medicine. Other interests include contributions of scholarly works, ranging from the historic and modern development in biomedical engineering to the life sciences and medicine enabled by new technologies. The main goal of IEEE Reviews in Biomedical Engineering is to consolidate the research and state-of-the-art reviews for members of all the IEEE societies that have an interest in biomedical engineering. There is a significant demand for such reviews among the authors of various IEEE journals that publish biomedical-related articles, but the current journals, with their focus on original articles and communications/letters, are not able to meet this demand. The RBME, therefore, will receive, review, and publish, under one umbrella. the contributions of scholarly works, ranging from historic and modern development in biomedical engineering to the life sciences and medicine enabled by technologies covered by the various IEEE societies and vice versa. It is expected that this journal will achieve a high impact factor through the emergence and popularity of the field and relentless insistence from the very beginning on the high impact, high quality contributions and selection of state-of-the-art topics of wide appeal to the scientific community.

IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing
Sponsored by the Geosciences and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) and the IEEE Committee on Earth Observations (ICEO), the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing will focus on the growing field of applications in Earth observations and remote sensing. The journal will also provide a venue for the rapidly expanding special issues that are being sponsored by the Geosciences and Remote Sensing Society. The journal will draw upon the experience of the highly successful IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing to provide a complementary medium for the wide range of topics in applied earth observations.

The ‘Applications’ areas planned for the journal encompasses the societal benefit areas of the Global Earth Observations Systems of Systems (GEOSS) program. Through deliberations over two years, ministers from 50 countries agreed to identify nine areas where Earth observation could positively impact the quality of life and health of their respective countries. Some of these are areas not traditionally addressed in the IEEE context. These include biodiversity, biotechnology, healthcare, climate, communications, computers, signal processing and ocean engineering as they relate to earth observations and remote sensing. Specific themes for the journal include understanding, assessing, predicting, mitigating, and adapting to climate variability and change; improving water resource management through better understanding of the water cycle; improving the management and protection of terrestrial, coastal and marine ecosystems; and supporting sustainable agriculture and combating desertification.
