Section Management Breakout Sessions

Running a successful Section requires having the tools and support to do the job. This track provides information on obtaining support and resources from the IEEE organization and discusses best practices to follow. Several sessions will address how to manage activities such as finances, conferences and affinity groups. Effective practices for planning successful meetings, volunteer recruitment and leadership development will be covered. New tools for supporting the volunteer administrative responsibilities will also be introduced.



All breakout sessions will be held at the Quebec City Convention Center and are 1hr 15 minutes in length.  The presentation from each session will be posted to this web page after IEEE Sections Congress.

Affinity Group Management (Life Members, WIE, GOLD and Consultants Network)
What are the benefits of affinity groups for Sections? How do we form, maintain and manage affinity groups? What funding is available for affinity group activities?  This session will be held on Saturday at 1:00pm and Sunday 10:45am.

Communicating the IEEE Message
Marketing and public relations can go a long way in getting name recognition within the community, recruiting new members and keeping current members informed. Concepts and best practices will be presented. This session will be held on Saturday at 2:30pm.

Compliance and Regulatory Issues Affecting Sections
Section leaders benefit by having a background and understanding of the legal and regulatory framework in which IEEE Sections operate. This session will review the more common regulations that impact IEEE and its Sections. Section leaders will have an opportunity to interact with IEEE staff working in this area. This session will be held on Saturday at 3:45pm.

Conference Management
Planning a Conference? Tap the wealth of IEEE knowledge gathered over the years on how to have a successful conference. In addition, find out about IEEE Conference business requirements and support services. This session will be held on Saturday at 3:45pm and

Introducing vTools and How to Enhance the Volunteer Experience
IEEE volunteers are developing a web-based suite of volunteer tools called vTools. These tools offer simplified and automated solutions in support of Section and chapter meeting administration and calendar events. In addition, work is being done to address a broad range of needs that include automated Web site development, electronic voting, finance, student branch reporting, demographics and more. Come and learn about this exciting new project and how it will support Section operations. This session will be held on Saturday at 2:30pm and 10:45am on Sunday.

Leadership Development
Leadership skills, techniques, strategies and methods will be presented for successful Section management. Developing leadership skills of Section members will also be discussed. This session will be held on Saturday at 3:45pm and 10:45am on Sunday.

Media Training for Section Leaders
Learn what types of events are most likely to generate media attendance, tips to interest journalists in your event and how to handle reporters’ questions in advance and onsite. Understand what reporters really want and how to prepare for providing what they need. Tools and tips for developing events, handling media interviews and delivering consistent messaging will be presented for IEEE’s 125th anniversary celebration activities and beyond.This session will be held on Sunday at 9:15am.

Planning Successful Meetings for Sections and Chapters

Section Financial Management Relationship with IEEE Business Processes

Strategic Planning—How to Incorporate the IEEE and MGA Vision at the Local Level
Strategic planning allows Section leaders to prepare for the future. How far ahead should the plan extend? What are the key strategic issues to consider in a strategic plan? How can the Section incorporate the IEEE and MGA vision/mission into their activities? This session will be held on Saturday at 1:00pm and Sunday at 1:30pm.
