IEEE TV Tower in Second Life

Situated at the center of IEEE Island 1, the IEEE.tv Tower houses four multimedia theaters.

Each theater provides to Second Life residents on-demand viewing of select IEEE.tv programming.

Opportunities to help develop the IEEE islands are open to IEEE staff, volunteer and member groups. If you'd like to participate, please contact the IEEE Second Life Team.

IEEE Islands in Second Life® is an online 3-D virtual community where IEEE members gather in a single location. These members, known as “island residents,” choose virtual characters, or “avatars,” for themselves that allow them to explore the islands. Residents can set up virtual meetings (complete with PowerPoint presentations and video), check out a student branch’s robot-building project, learn about IEEE standards, chat with other members, and more.

Please note:

  • You must first create an avatar before you can install Second Life. See the below instructions for details.
  • Due to company network restrictions and unique IP limitations, please create an avatar on your home network to ensure the registration process goes smoothly.

Step 1: Create an Avatar

Due to company network restrictions and unique IP limitations, please create an avatar on your home network to ensure the registration process goes smoothly.

  1. Open a web browser and go to Second Life.
  2. Click on the the button that says "Join Now."
  3. Follow the rest of the prompts to create an avatar and then follow the directions on how to install Second Life below.

Step 2: Install Second Life

To use Second Life, you must install the Second Life client application on your computer.

  1. Download the Second Life installation file.
  2. Run the installation file.
  3. Open Second Life.
  4. Login as your avatar.

Enjoy the metaverse!  Tips:

  • Try completing all Second Life tutorials first.
  • Visit the IEEE Islands.

Help the IEEE Computer Society plan their presence inside Second Life! The Computer Society seeks to gain expertise in using virtual technology as a business tool for areas such as immersive training, simulations and visualization.

Professionals, students and IEEE members are encouraged to attend.


 The Islands

IEEE Island 1

Island 1 is populated with IEEE buildings such as the IEEE.tv Tower, Standards Association, human resources center, and conference center.

IEEE Island 2

Island 2 serves as a location for IEEE section, society, chapter and student groups to occupy and conduct their own IEEE activities.
