IEEE Islands in Second Life

 Featured: The IEEE.tv Tower

IEEE TV Tower in Second Life

Situated at the center of IEEE Island 1, the IEEE.tv Tower houses four multimedia theaters.

Each theater provides to Second Life residents on-demand viewing of select IEEE.tv programming.

 Help Develop the Islands

Opportunities to help develop the IEEE islands are open to IEEE staff, volunteer and member groups. If you'd like to participate, please contact the IEEE Second Life Team.

The IEEE presence in Second Life is spread across two islands and serves as a gateway for interested people to explore and participate in the activities of the IEEE.

On this page:

Island 1 Overview

Island 1 represents the IEEE corporate headquarters in Second Life.  Here visitors can experience a broad range of IEEE activities.  Currently found on Island 1 are the following:

Telehub

Telehub

When they first arrive on IEEE Islands, avatars appear at the Telehub, where basic tutorial information is readily available. One can quickly learn how to control their avatar, the camera, instant message, change appearance, use gestures, and navigate their inventory before leaving the Telehub. It is highly suggested users view the tutorial information before exploring the islands to maximize their experience.

Pods

Pods

The island's pods are one-room areas available to IEEE organizations seeking to promote specific activities, such as upcoming events, projects and conferences. Each pod can contain a variety of content, including movies and music. Pods require less involvement and knowledge of Second Life to maintain compared to a large parcel or villa, which also makes them an ideal first step for IEEE groups exploring the potential of Second Life.

Auditorium

Auditorium

The Auditorium is the central meeting place of the islands. Presentations and conferences in the virtual world are conducted within the auditorium. Movies can be displayed on the screen as well as still images from web URLs.

IEEE.tv Tower

IEEE.tv Tower

IEEE.tv Tower houses four theater rooms displaying various episodes of IEEE.tv. Users can choose one of eight available episodes as well as click on content linked to the IEEE.tv website. The tower also serves as an observation platform over IEEE Islands.

IEEE Standards Association campus

Standards Campus

The Standards Campus is the official presence of the IEEE Standards Association in Second Life. The campus houses a Standards Library, Auditorium, Conference Center, and Media Studio. Explore the campus to learn more about Standards and potentially get involved with Machinima animations being filmed at the studio.

Human Resources

Human Resources Center

The Human Resources Center provides general information about staff positions. Avatars can learn more about jobs within the IEEE and view a map of all the real world office locations. A link to the official IEEE website that lists current job openings is also provided within the building.

Sandbox

Sandbox

The sandbox area allows avatars to practice their building, scripting, and texture work. It is open to all visitors of IEEE Islands. Billboards inside the sandbox provide links to developers' resources to assist avatars in learning the tools of Second Life.

Island 2 Overview

Island 2 serves as a location for IEEE section, society, chapter and student groups to occupy and conduct their own IEEE activities.  Currently found on Island 2 are the following:

Tutorial Dome

Tutorial Dome

The Tutorial Dome is the central location on IEEE Island 2, where beginner to advanced users can learn more about Second Life through a series of tutorials.

IEEE Robotics and Automation Society

IEEE Robotics and Automation Society

The IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) was the first group of IEEE members to take advantage of IEEE’s parcel system. RAS constructed a building which houses general information about the society as well as information regarding events and public activities. Autonomous robots can be found outside the building demonstrating the interactive capabilities of Second Life. Tutorials are provided inside the RAS building which contains information on how to create one’s own robot.

Villas

Villas

Twelve villas on Island 2 are open to student groups from all ten regions within the IEEE. The villas provide an opportunity for student groups to occupy and create their own presence on IEEE Islands without the heavy involvement of creating their own building. Pre-made assets are provided to occupants allowing them to populate the villas with content easily.

Parcels

Parcels

Parcels are subdivisions of Island 2 that are available to IEEE sections and IEEE societies wishing to develop their own presence on the IEEE islands. Much more involved than managing a pod or a villa, parcels provide an opportunity to create unique buildings or campuses to promote these IEEE organization's activities or research.
