Understanding the IEEE   

Organization of IEEE

The IEEE is organized into:

  • 300 local sections in 10 geographic regions
  • 1,570 local chapters
  • 39 societies and 5 technical councils that compose 10 technical divisions
  • More than 1,430 student branches in 80 countries
  • More than 350 student branch chapters

IEEE activities are directed by three top-tier governing bodies:

The IEEE Board of Directors also maintains standing committees that oversee a variety of administrative, planning, and governance functions of IEEE.

The work of IEEE is led by the IEEE Presidents (President-Elect, Preseident and CEO, Past President), who are elected by the Membership and the IEEE Executive Director, who is the full-time Chief Operating Officer.
