Piscataway, N.J. – 29 June 2021 – IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, announced today that it has reached an open access read and publish agreement with IReL, the Irish licensing consortium.

The transformative read and publish agreement enables corresponding IReL authors to publish open access articles in IEEE’s industry-leading journals and provides reading access to over five million documents from the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. The agreement also makes it more convenient for authors to publish open access articles with IEEE as eligible authors pay no article processing charges (APCs): these costs are covered by IReL under the agreement.

Under this agreement, researchers will have access to the IEEE Electronic Library (IEL), the premier collection of IEEE journals, conferences, and standards via IEEE Xplore. IReL authors are now able to publish open access articles in approximately 160 leading journals published by IEEE, making them instantly available and free to read by the general public. IReL comprises nine Irish universities, including Dublin City University, Maynooth University, National University Ireland Galway, Technological University Dublin, Trinity College Dublin, University College Cork, University College Dublin, and University of Limerick.

“IEEE is very pleased to have reached this agreement with the research community at IReL, which will provide Irish scholars with a wide array of open access publishing options across our highly cited journal portfolio,” said Karen Hawkins, IEEE Chief Marketing Officer. “We look forward to working with other institutions to create agreements that allow IEEE to share the work of leading researchers with the global research community to further scientific and engineering progress and support economic development.”

“This agreement makes open access as easy as possible for researchers, while continuing to allow them to choose the best possible journals to submit their works,” said Jack Hyland, IReL Manager. “Their articles will be open access immediately upon publication, so they will reach the widest possible readership, without restrictions.”
