What is CrossCheck?

Cross Check logoCrossCheck compares submitted manuscripts against a very large database of published technical papers (as well as over 6 billion web pages), and provides editors with a summary report that highlights the similarity to previously published work. The publisher can then follow up to isolate and review the high-scoring papers as necessary.

Plagiarism detection systems are only as effective as the amount and quality of the source content within them. CrossCheck’s significant advantage over all other similar services is that it includes the indexed, full-text content of participating CrossCheck member publishers.

Staff support of CrossCheck

IEEE IPR Office staff is ready to help review the results of manuscript submissions to CrossCheck by editors.

To help support editors who use CrossCheck, the IEEE IPR Office has dedicated staff members to assist in the review of all similarity results. Staff members will provide editors with a brief summary of the types of problems found (such as plagiarism or multiple submission) and advise on any actions that may need to be taken.

Conference organizers are encouraged to use CrossCheck as early as possible during the manuscript review process.

Since CrossCheck detects similar content that may turn out to be problematic, IEEE encourages organizers to screen their authors’ submissions prior to publishing the proceedings. This will allow organizers to take any necessary editorial actions without delaying the publication of the proceedings and, more importantly, the posting of the proceedings in Xplore. There are two ways conferences can take advantage of CrossCheck.

1. Choose a vendor that includes CrossCheck screening to IEEE
The following vendors have integrated CrossCheck into their systems and provide CrossCheck as part of their services:

2. Sign up to use the CrossCheck Portal
Organizers who would prefer to use their own process for manuscript submission will be pleased to know that IEEE offers a standalone CrossCheck application that makes manuscript submission easy. The CrossCheck Portal offers a simple, streamlined interface, as well as a direct connection to IPR Office staff members, who can help flag problematic papers.

Conferences using their own submission systems also can integrate CrossCheck into their systems by using the iThenticate API Guide. A copy of the guide is available below. Please contact the IEEE IPR Office at copyrights@ieee.org for more details about integrating your system with CrossCheck.

All editors using ScholarOne have CrossCheck included in their submission process.

CrossCheck was first made available to all ScholarOne editors-in-chief in early 2009, but using the service required editors to manually select files to upload to CrossCheck. In February 2013, a new feature was added to ScholarOne to automatically upload all new manuscript submissions to CrossCheck without any action needed by the publications’ EICs. This new feature represents a significant time-saving benefit for editors and allows all IEEE periodicals that use S1M to be compliant with the recently approved policy requiring all content to be submitted to a plagiarism detection software.

The CrossCheck Portal is available to all periodical editors.

EICs who do not use ScholarOne will be pleased to know the IEEE CrossCheck Portal is also available to journal editors, offering them the same simple, streamlined interface, as well as a direct connection to IEEE staff members who can help flag problematic papers.
