About Optical Fiber Sensors 2002

Since 1983, the International Conference on Optical Fiber Sensors (OFS) has been an exciting forum for reporting and discussing the latest progress in optical fiber sensing and related technologies. The series of OFS conferences, held approximately every one and a half years, has established a tradition for providing researchers with a high-quality technical program accompanied by an interesting social program and a changing venue. The fifteenth OFS conference in this series will be held 6-10 May 2002, at the Portland Hilton in Portland, Oregon. Highlights of OFS 15 include preliminary sessions, invited presentations, two poster sessions, an after-dinner post-deadline paper session, our traditional banquet dinner with a "northwest" flavor, and visits to Portland and the surrounding area.

The Portland area offers a wide variety of opportunities for entertainment prior to, following, or during the conference week. The convenient downtown location of the Portland Hilton, directly adjacent to the Oregon Symphony, the Oregon Ballet, theaters, shopping and restaurants, will allow attendees many entertainment and relaxation opportunities. Nearby attractions include the Portland Japanese Gardens, the Hoyt Arboretum, the Oregon Zoo, the Portland Chinese Garden, the World Forestry Center, the worldÕs largest bookstore, professional basketball and baseball, and many other attractions. Outside the city, the Columbia River Gorge area is an outdoor paradise with approximately 50 of the 500 top rated waterfalls in Oregon, Washington and Idaho and hundreds of miles of well maintained trails. Just north of Portland lie Mt. St. Helens Volcanic area and Mt. Adams. East is Mt. Hood, the highest peak in Oregon and the third major volcanic neighbor of the city of Portland. In the Mt. Hood area one can find a wide variety of terrain, hikes and vistas ranging from easy access by car to true wilderness areas. To the west lies the Pacific Ocean and what many consider to be the most beautiful beaches in the continental US. Mountains, parks, waterfalls and thousands of miles of hiking trails await.

We welcome you to OFS 15.
