In honor of International Women in Engineering Day, IEEE celebrates the following IEEE Award recipients whose work has led to cutting-edge innovations. We honor these recipients who had the vision to see how technology could improve society, the expertise to realize their visions, and the drive to overcome obstacles that stood in their way.

Their work has not only enabled—or improved—current technology but also has inspired future engineers to improve upon their work to make their marks in science, technology, or education.

2023 IEEE President’s Award: Doreen Bogdan-Martin

This IEEE member has championed global connectivity and digital inclusion for over three decades.

2023 IEEE Mildred Dresselhaus Medal: Melba Crawford

Sponsored by Google LLC

Crawford’s methods are especially important in remote areas such as the Korean Artic and Okavango Delta in Botswana.

2023 IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal: co-recipient, Ingeborg Hochmair

Sponsored by Nokia Bell Labs

The impact of her work and that of her co-recipient, Erwin Hochmair, have enabled countless people to hear and communicate for the first time.

2023 IEEE Medal for Innovations in Healthcare Technology: Rebecca Richards-Kortum

Sponsored by the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society

Richards-Kortum’s pioneering work for early cancer detection applies these and other technologies to engineers providing better and more equitable global health.

2023 IEEE Frances E. Allen Medal: Lydia E. Kavraki

Sponsored by IBM

Kavraki is now working with NASA to advance the capabilities of robots designed for space missions including the Space Gateway, humanity’s first space station in lunar orbit, and the portal for NASA’s ambitious deep-space exploration plans.

2023 IEEE Theodore W. Hissey Outstanding Young Professional Award: Anna Zakrzewska

Sponsored by the IEEE Young Professionals, Photonics Society, Power & Energy Society

Zakrzewska’s patents by global telecom operators have improved service for users worldwide, and her volunteering efforts have made her a role model for women engineers.
