Broadening Participation, IEEE Computer Society Special Technical Community on

The IEEE Computer Society Strategic Technical Community on Broadening Participation in Computing (STCBPC) looks at all aspects of achieving a broader workforce. Computing and Information technology (IT) are driving innovation and economic growth in almost every societal and business sector. Not surprisingly, computing and IT are among the fastest-growing areas of job growth. As such, people who are eligible to work in computing and IT jobs have the opportunity for personal economic prosperity, and, importantly, these people have the opportunity to contribute to innovations with far-reaching global societal consequences, such as healthcare, energy, sustainability, and security. It stands to reason that the 21st century technology workforce should be accessible to all demographic groups and world citizens in developing nations - to provide all people with fair access to gainful employment, as well as to infuse a diversity of talent, creativity and perspectives for shaping future innovations and applications of computing.

STCBPC has three specific aims:

  • To coordinate various efforts in broadening participation and address widespread systemic change
  • To address a critical need for central referencing (e.g. referencing publications and portals and build upon prior work)
  • To address the continued need for awareness (e.g. advocacy, policy change, a unified voice, continue where NSF and others have left off, and extend to international domains)
